A look to the future?Posted Tuesday, January 22, 2008 by Bruce Reisman The San Juan Hills High School Freshman Basketball team got a potential glimpse of the future this past week. The Stallions, future varsity competitors in the Pacific Coast League, met league powerhouse Corona Del Mar in two matches. The CDM Sea Kings, last year’s Varsity CIF champion in Division III-A, also field very competitive freshman and sophomore teams. San Juan Hills played both teams during the week and emerged with two key wins, improving their record to 18-1. The game against the Sea Kings’ sophomore team featured a quick start with the Stallions exploding to a 12-3 lead in the first few minutes behind effective outlet passing to a streaking Elliott Bragg who scored on three straight breakaways. The Sea Kings kept it close with deadeye shooting accuracy from their forward, Matt, who had four three-pointers in the 1st quarter alone, and would finish the night with seven and game-high 31 points. The game got close in the fourth, when CDM took its first lead early in the quarter, 39-38. The lead was to be short-lived as SJH responded with an offensive barrage that makes it difficult to remember that these kids are just freshmen. The Stallion’s scored 28 points in the 4th to pull away with the win, 66-55. Michael Perryman took complete control of the game, scoring 10 of his team high 18 in the final minutes of the game, during a stretch where it seemed his hands were continually on the ball at both ends of the court and at the free throw line. Cody Schmitz had a great game adding 7 of his total of 13 and Bragg was 4-for-4 from the line during the 4th quarter barrage. Will Acromite and Bragg rounded out the four Stallions that reached double figures for the night. Last week saw the start of a new high school sports rivalry, no doubt. |
